PrayPal speaks to the significance of the occult as a medium that drives legitimate, self evolving narratives of being. One that takes the processes out of a distinctly human project, and confounds it with the weird and the eerie – both as a mode of affect, as well as a mode of science. It serves as a doorway, with an affective pull towards matters of being that demand attention, by colliding it with the anomalous. Where the sphere of the occult is a medium for understanding the threshold between physicality and spirituality, the conscious and unconscious, the human and non-human, it is there too that we might find that we are not bound within singularity. But rather, this threshold illuminates the true is nature of our contemporary social experiences, and reveals our relationship to our state as neoliberal subjects through manner and matter of ghosts, orbs, hauntings, spectres, plasma, spirits, gods, demons etc. And for those who have long understood the multiplicities of being, PrayPal is perhaps a haunted ontology – a hauntology – and it speaks to our humanity; to the elements of intangible oppression and suffering, and to the desires and wants that do not and cannot be sustained in reality. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59d71cdb3e00befc732fb636/1596560062864-8XM1PB97RE2ULCWBO1FN/IMG_8324.JPG Projects - Resigning Mass Tristan Lim 25 July – 9 August 2020 We continue our programming at I_S_L_A_N_D_S with Resigning Mass, featuring new video work by multimedia artist, Tristan Lim, with collaborators Rafi Abdullah and Darius Ou. Resigning Mass centres itself around a script based on conversational scenes compiled from various films, forming a collaged conversation between two parties. This script is the material for which the presented characters are literally and metaphorically shaped on, affecting their forms and lives. It becomes the commandment that shapes every aspect of the characters. Images extracted from the same filmic scenes are then converted into 3D models, shaping the appearance of these anthropomorphic vessels. This presentation serves as the debut of To New Entities(TNE), a long-form project which seeks to re-envision visual media as bodies, characters, and/or vessels. Positing that nothing truly original can be conceived in contemporary times, the project looks at media as a well-spring of material deconstruction. With each exercise, formal qualities are remixed and remediated to create new expressions of resonance and dissonance – interrupting the chain of translation to produce interesting results. In Between, Comfort Things draws inspiration from the artist’s abiding interest in meditative processes as well as the significance of holding space for deeper conversations. In Between, Comfort Things speak to a deeply personal confrontation of what the artist describes as ‘comfort in bad faith,’ or feigning ignorance towards social issues (such as racism, xenophobia, and sexism), too often internalised for the sake of maintaining the status quo and simply getting on with life. In the artist’s own words, “I can make space for myself and fully sit with traumatic incidents and circumstances that’ve been avoided or compartmentalised – contextualising them through visual narratives to process the experience in its entirety… essentially ridding myself of deceptive comfort through a meditative and movement driven process.” Each work is created through a layered, intuitive, and movement-driven process that parallels the purification and purgation and of one’s emotions. Primarily composed of repurposed textiles and fabrics of personal significance, these pieces are stripped down to their essence before being assembled, reassembled, again and again until a visual narrative organically emerges.
